This month, Star Jewelers is teaming up with The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute to help raise awareness and support their amazing research and patient assistance efforts.
According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 (12%) women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. It is the second most common cancer in women, after skin cancer, and the second most leading cause of cancer death in women, surpassed only by lung cancer. The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2013 are:
- About 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.
- About 39,620 women will die from breast cancer.
However, there is some good news- after increasing for two decades, female breast cancer incidence rates started decreasing in 2000, and dropped by 7% from 2002 to 2003. The decrease is in large part due to a decline in the use of hormone therapy, as well as earlier detection, increased awareness, and improvements in treatment. There are 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the US today.
To honor these brave women and help continue the fight against breast cancer, Star Jewelers is offering 10% off ANY pink jewelry in the month of October. 5% of the proceeds of these sales will go to help The Stefanie Spielman Fund continue the important work they do in our community.
